PRINCETON, N.J. — Columbia fencing claimed two Ivy League trophies Sunday, punctuating a dramatic day at the Ivy League Round Robin Championships with multiple matches decided in the final bout.
The Lion women earned an outright championship after finishing a perfect 6-0, while the men went 4-1 to tie Harvard for first place.
The double victory marked the sixth time since 2015 and the 13th time overall that Columbia has swept both the men's and women's events. The women secured their 15th Ivy League title, while the men captured their 43rd, both the most among Ivy League programs.
"Every match came down to who wanted it more today," said head coach Michael Aufrichtig. "There were so many moments where every single touch mattered, and we knew it. From the summer, starting with our captains, we committed to an idea — the power of the team. That everybody matters. That it would take the entire group to win. And that's exactly what happened this weekend. The whole team came together, and we won together."
The women opened the day in a back-and-forth battle against Harvard. Trailing 12-10, Columbia rallied to pull even at 13-13, setting up a decisive final bout in women's foil. Carolina Stutchbury delivered the clincher, lifting the Lions to the win. Columbia later earned a share of the title after Harvard defeated Princeton while the Lions were on a bye.
Columbia's final match against Princeton again came down to the final bout. With the score tied 13-13, Stutchbury stepped in once more and secured a 5-2 victory, sealing Columbia's first outright Ivy League championship since 2020.
Stutchbury also captured the women's foil individual title, finishing 14-1 on the day. Zander Rhodes (foil), Tamar Gordon (sabre), Tierna Oxenreider (epee) and Nicole Xuan (epee) earned second-team All-Ivy League honors.
On the men's side, Columbia opened with a 19-8 win over Penn before capitalizing on another Harvard victory over Princeton. The Lions surged ahead midway through their matchup with Harvard and closed out a 17-10 win to secure a share of the championship.
Julien Lim placed second in epee, Marsel Nagimov finished runner-up in foil, and Zeyad Nofal and Will Morrill placed second and third in sabre to earn first-team All-Ivy League honors. Skyler Liverant (epee) and Samarth Kumbla (foil) were named to the second team.
Columbia returns to action Wednesday, February 25, at the George Kolombatovich Historical Meet, hosted by NYU, facing Sacred Heart, Vassar and the Violets.
