Lions open Ivy League play 1-0 and improves to 8-0 at home
NEW YORK – The Columbia women's tennis team opened Ivy League play with a thrilling victory over in-state rivals Cornell, defeating the Big Red 4-2 on Saturday afternoon inside the Philip & Cheryl Milstein Family Tennis Center.
With the win, Columbia improves to 11-3 on the year and 8-0 at home.
The Lions quickly gained an early advantage, as Emily Baek and Sophia Wang quickly defeated Emma Baker and Dylan Gelber 6-0 to hold the advantage after the first doubles match.
Cornell responded with a 6-3 victory in the one-seed doubles, with Michelle Ryndin and Sage Loudon defeating Gayathri Krishnan and Sabrina Lin. The doubles point came down to a close contest in the No. 2 doubles, with Michelle Li and Amber Yin pulling out a tight 6-4 victory over Victoria Zhao and Andrea Martinez De Los Rios to put the Lions up 1-0 in the match.
Columbia again got out to a quick start in singles play, with Amber Yin defeating Emma Baker 6-1, 6-1 in the six seed. Gayathri Krishnan followed suit, besting Michelle Ryndin 6-1, 6-4 in the one seed.
Cornell would again respond. The Big Red claimed the three and two-seed singles, both by scores of 6-2, 6-2, with Victoria Zhao defeating Emily Baek and Sage Loudon beating Sophia Wang.
With the overall match score at 3-2 favoring the Lions, the contest would be decided by a pair of three set matches. After dropping the first set in the No. 4 seed contest, Michelle Li battled back to win the next two sets and claim the match at a score of 2-6, 6-4, 6-2, defeating Dylan Gelber. This result claimed the overall victory for the Lions at a score of 4-2.
The five-seed contest was a tight three-set affair that went unfinished, with Margaret Hui and Andrea Martinez De Los Rios even at 6-4, 3-6, 5-5.
