STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Columbia came back in the seventh inning to tie up the second game and take it into extra innings, but lost in the bottom of the 11th inning on a walk-off home run, 2-1. The Lions also lost the first game of the double header 2-1. CU is now 11-11 on the season.
Columbia got on the board first, scoring one run in the top of the first inning. Junior Maiya Chard-Yaron led off with a single to right field. First-year Ciji Rich joined her on base with help from a Stony Brook error. Hilary Parsons moved the runners to second and third with a sacrifice bunt and with one out, Kacy Krisman executed a suicide squeeze to score Chard-Yaron and give the Lions the lead.
The Seawolves took the lead in the bottom of the first inning, hitting a two-run home run to go ahead 2-1.
Jackie Adelfio pitched the loss for the Lions, dropping her record to 7-4, giving up two hits in six innings while striking out six. CU out hit Stony Brook seven to two, with Chard-Yaron going 3-for-4 at the plate and Kim Krisman going 2-for-3, with a double.
Stony Brook started the second game with a lead at the end of the first, 1-0. The Seawolves combined for three hits and one walk to push the runner across the plate.
The score stayed the same until the top of the seventh inning when Columbia tied up the score 1-1. With two outs, designated player Lacie Nelson hit a hard double to right center and then Marisa Marconi hit a double to left center on the next pitch to bring her to the plate. Stony Brook didn't score in the bottom of the inning, so the game went into extra innings.
The game remained tied until the bottom of the 11th inning, when Stony Brook's Kristen Brust hit a walk-off home run to end the game, 2-1.
Rich, Nelson and Lexie Costic all went 2-for-4 in the game with Megan Ivey pitching the loss for CU. Ivey pitched 10 innings, facing 39 batters, allowing nine hits while striking out three.
Columbia continues play on Thursday, March 24th at St. Peter's in Jersey City, N.J. Game time is 2:30 p.m.
