NEW YORK, N.Y. - Trailing 3-1 in the top of the seventh inning, Cornell's Seth Gordon hit a two-out double to right center to tie the game and the Big Red went on to win 5-3 in extra innings. Cornell took game two of the doubleheader 9-6.
Columbia took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, when Ray Waters led off the inning with a single up the middle and scored two plays later on an error. Cornell tied the game up in the second when an error in left field scored Jimmy Heinz.
The Lions scored two more runs in the fifth when Noah Cooper led off the inning with a single and Ray Waters was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with no outs. Craig Rodwogin looped a single into center field to score Cooper and advanced to second on the throw. Tighe Holden hit a sacrifice fly to dead center to score Waters and give the Lions a 3-1 lead.
Columbia starter Bill Purdy, after pitching six innings and giving up only one unearned run, pitched to the 7-8-9 batters in the top of the seventh. Conor Kelly lead off with a single, and Garrett Wasson came in to pinch run for Kelly. Ry Kagan flied out and William Pauly was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second with one out. Jimmy Heinz reached on a fielder's choice, which led way for Seth Gordon, who roped a two-out shot to the right center gap. Ray Waters raced after the ball and stretched for it. The ball hit his glove and popped out to score two runs and tie the game.
Cornell scored two runs on two hits in the eighth for the win. Bill Purdy took the loss for Columbia, pitching eight innings and giving up five runs, just two earned and striking out three. Rocky Collis earned the win for Cornell, pitching seven innings and giving up two earned runs.
Walker Toma earned the save for the Big Red, pitching the bottom of the eighth.
Waters was 3-for-3 with two runs scored, while Craig Rodwogin was 2-for-2 and Dan Neczypor was 2-for-4.
In game two, Cornell scored early and often, plating three in the first and three in the second and one run in the following three innings to take a 9-3 lead.
The Lions added three runs in the bottom of the ninth inning on two hits and an error.
Tad Bardenwerper earned the win for Cornell, while Brendan Quinn got the loss for the Lions. Greg Mullens pitched four innings of scoreless relief for the Lions, striking out five and retiring 12 consecutive batters.
Waters added three hits in game two, making his two-game total 6-for-8, with four runs scored.
Columbia returns to action on Sunday, when the host Cornell for the final Ivy League home doubleheader at noon.
