NEW YORK, N.Y. - The Columbia baseball team will welcome ten new players in the fall of 2005, Head Coach Paul Fernandes announced today. In direct contrast to last season's recruits, this class boasts eight position players and two pitchers. Last year, eight pitchers dominated the group of 12 student-athletes.
Catcher Brett Joss and right-handed pitcher Brett Beller both attended Harvard Westlake School in California. Joss hails from Agoura Hills, California, while Beller joins the Lions from Los Angeles.
Another incoming catcher, Johnathan Tasman, is from Huntington Station, New York. Tasman played at Huntington High School.
Spencer Silverstein, a third baseman from Bell Canyon, California, attended Calabasas High School.
Joe Mizzoni, who comes to the Lions from Lake Braddock Secondary School in Virginia, is another addition to the infield.
Kyle Roberts from Chester Springs, Pennsylvania is also an infielder. Roberts played at Downingtown High School East Campus.
Two New Englanders round out the infield. Mike Roberts went to Lynnfield High School in Massachusetts and Ronny Williams of Fairfield, Connecticut attended Fairfield College Preparatory.
The other right-handed pitcher in the class of 2009 is Joe Scarlata from East Walpole Massachusetts. Scarlatta went to Walpole High School.
Full story to come.
