The life of a Division I student-athlete, while fulfilling, often involves incredible time demands. Balancing a full course load with daily practice, strength and conditioning sessions, appointments in the training room, and competing around the country can be challenging for anyone. Recent national surveys have shown that 30% of intercollegiate student-athletes reported being overwhelmed during the past 30 days and 35% of high school seniors are frequently overwhelmed by all they have to do. To help Columbia student-athletes manage the oftentimes stressful balancing act of being a Division I intercollegiate student-athlete, Columbia Athletics offers performance psychology and mental health services within the department.

All Columbia student-athletes have access to:

  • Individual Counseling Sessions
    • One-on-one mental training: to enhance performance, confidence, focus, and performance planning and to decrease performance anxiety and manage stress
    • One-on-one mental health counseling to deal with issues ranging from depression and anxiety to difficulties with interpersonal relations or the transition to college
  • Team Meetings
    • Group mental training: to enhance team chemistry, improve communication, address team culture issues, and develop performance enhancement skills
