Greg Skjold returned to the Columbia staff after spending the 2023 season as the offensive coordinator and offensive line coach at Union College with Jon Poppe.
In his first season with the Lions, he was part of the Ivy League Coaching Staff of the Year, which helped Columbia secure its first conference title since 1961. The Lions saw right tackle Noah Jordan and left guard John Iannuzzi, who was one of the top-rated linemen in the country according to PFF, pick up second-team All-Ivy League honors. Columbia posted 4.6 yards per carry, the best mark in program history and racked up 1,886 rushing yards on the season to rank No. 2 in the Ivy League.
During his return stint at Union, Skjold helped guide the Garnet Chargers to a 10-2 record and a trip to the second round of the Division III NCAA Championships. The Union offense saw two All-Liberty League First Team selections, three second team selections and two honorable mention honorees. Skjold helped guide one of the nation’s top running back combinations in Michael Fiore and Jonathan Anderson. In the last game of the season, the pair became the 27th teammates in Division III history, and the first ever at Union, to rush for over 1,000 yards in the same season.
Skjold previously spent six years as an assistant at Columbia under Al Bagnoli. Skjold served as tight ends and offensive quality control coach, helping to lead the Lions as Columbia won the second-most games in program history in 2021 and produced the winningest class for the program since 1956. In addition to leading the tight end group, Skjold produced weekly self-scouts and opponent scouting reports for the staff, created practice plans and scripts, and assisted in the evaluation, research, and vetting of potential recruits from across the country.
Prior to his time at Columbia, Skjold spent four seasons at the Division III level at Trinity (Conn.) College and Worcester Polytechnic Institute. As the Tight Ends and Fullbacks Coach and Video Coordinator, the Bantams posted a 23-2 record in his two seasons and won a NESCAC championship in 2016. He also spent two seasons as the Offensive Line and Tight Ends Coach and Video Coordinator with the Engineers from 2013-14, helping to improve the team’s win total in both seasons.
Skjold’s first coaching position was at his alma mater, where he served as a Football Operations Intern under former head coach John Audino in 2013.
Skjold was a key member of the offensive line at Union over his four seasons from 2009 to 2012, starting at multiple positions for three years. Union posted a 19-7 record in conference play and earned a share of two Liberty League titles during his time on campus, as well as winning the 2009 ECAC North Atlantic Bowl and three Dutchman Shoes games. As a senior, he earned D3football.com All-East Region third-team and All-Liberty League first-team honors.
Skjold earned his bachelor’s degree in managerial economics from Union in 2013 and earned a master’s degree in American Studies from Trinity in 2021.
