A 13-year coaching veteran, Ryan Larsen begins his third season on the Columbia Football staff after he was hired on March 20, 2019, to coach the Lions’ quarterbacks. Larsen arrived at Columbia after serving the previous four seasons as the Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach at NCAA Division III Stevenson University in Owings Mills, Md.

Larsen, who has achieved offensive success at every one of his coaching experiences, has worked at Stevenson University, Rhodes College, Wabash College, and Indiana University.

In his first year at Columbia in 2019, the Lions completed 58.8 percent of their passes (187 of 318) for 1,882 yards, 11 touchdowns with only 11 interceptions. Ty Lenhart led the Lions with a 60.5 percent completion rate (127 of 210) for 1,278 yards and threw eight touchdown passes.

In June 2021, Larsen was selected as a participant and attended the NFL/NCAA Football Coaches Academy. In Columbia’s athletic department, Larsen serves on the We Roar Together Committee on Diversity, Racial Justice, Equity, and Inclusion.

In four seasons on Stevenson Head Coach Ed Hottle’s staff, Larsen helped guide the Mustangs to four straight postseason appearances, one Middle Atlantic States Championship, three first or second place finishes in the MAC, a 32-12 overall record and three seasons of eight or more wins. During those four seasons, 37 offensive school records were set or re-established.

In 2018, the Mustangs finished 8-3 overall, 7-1 in the MAC and earned a postseason berth in the Centennial MAC Bowl Series game. Larsen led an offense that ranked among national leaders in completion percentage (No. 5, 67.6%), red zone offense (No. 36, 83.3%), passing efficiency (No. 36, 149.56), while six offensive players earned All-MAC honors.

In 2017, the Stevenson offense ranked No. 11 nationally in passing yardage (3,359 yards) and No. 21 in passing yards per game (305.4), while completing 62 percent of its passes. The Mustangs set or reestablished 14 team offensive records as well as eight individual school records while averaging 28.5 points per game and 403.1 yards of total offense per game. The Mustangs finished 6-5 but earned a berth in the ECAC James Lynah Bowl Game.

The 2016 season saw Stevenson win the program’s first-ever Middle Atlantic Conference championship, earn the program’s first-ever NCAA Division III playoff appearance after finishing with a program-best 9-2 overall record (8-1 MAC). The Mustangs ended the year ranked No. 20 in the D3football.com poll and No. 22 in the AFCA poll. Offensively, the team set 16 team offensive records and four individual offensive school records as the Mustangs averaged 34.9 points per game and 360.4 yards of offense per game.

During Larsen’s first season on staff, the Mustangs went 9-2 overall and won the Centennial-MAC Bowl Series against Muhlenberg College.

Offensive players have thrived under Larsen’s leadership as 21 Stevenson players earned all-conference honors in the last four seasons. 2017 Offensive Player of the Year/quarterback Dan Williams and wide receiver Preston Addo were both recognized as two-time First Team All-MAC selections. Williams ranked fifth nationally in completions (277), ninth in passing yards (3,198), 10th in completions per game (25.18), 22nd in passing yards per game (290.7) and completed 61.7 percent of his passes, while Addo ranked No. 9 nationally in receiving yards (1,234), 12th in all-purpose yards per game (170.7) and 13th in receiving yards per game (112.2).

Before his four-year stint at Stevenson, Larsen spent three seasons (2012-14) at Rhodes College (Tenn.) as its Offensive Coordinator, Recruiting Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach in 2014 and Passing Game Coordinator and Wide Receivers Coach in 2012-2013. In 2014, Larsen directed a balanced offensive attack that led to a second consecutive 8-2 season and a second place finish in the Southern Athletic Association. The Lynx rushed for 15 touchdowns and threw for 21 more, which led the SAA, while six starters earned all-conference honors. In 2013, Larsen directed a passing attack that saw quarterback Blake Box lead the SAA in touchdown passes and passing efficiency, tight end Charles Schneider top the conference in touchdown receptions and wide receiver Jonathan Wiener finish second in the SAA in yards per catch and fifth in receiving yards per game. In 2012, Larsen coached BSN preseason All-American wide receiver Jack Lartigue, who set school-records in almost every receiving category including single game receptions (18 vs. Trinity), career receptions, and receiving yards. The Lynx also enjoyed their first winning season in five years.

During his one year as Wide Receivers Coach at Wabash College, Ind. in 2011, the receiving corps accounted for 24 touchdown receptions in a campaign that saw the Little Giants win a conference championship and advance to the Elite Eight round of the NCAA Division III playoffs. Under Larsen’s tutelage, Wabash receivers Jonathan Horn and Wes Chamblee earned all-conference honors with Chamblee garnering All-Region and All-America honors as a return specialist.

Larsen spent two years at Indiana University working as Offensive Quality Control Assistant (2010) and Offensive Intern (2009). Indiana ranked No. 1 in the Big Ten Conference and No. 13 nationally in total passing with Larsen working with both the quarterbacks and wide receivers in 2010. He was one of 30 young coaches to participate in the NCAA Future Football Coaches Academy.

Following Stevenson’s recent 2018 season, Larsen was named the Head Coach for USA Football’s Under 18-Select Team, which played against the Panama National Team as part of the 10th annual International Bowl Series. The game took place in January 2019 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. In January 2018, Larsen served as Offensive Coordinator and Quarterbacks Coach for the same team against UANL of Mexico.

A 2009 graduate of Clarement McKenna College in Claremont, Calif., Larsen earned a degree in Literature and Leadership Studies. He was a four-year letterman at quarterback for the Stags and was the sole recipient of the 2009 Dickinson Student-Athlete Award for leadership, academic achievement, sportsmanship, and service to the CMS Athletic Department. In 2010, Larsen graduated with a Master of Science degree in Athletic Administration from Indiana University.

A Chicago, Ill. native, Larsen resides in Pelham, N.Y. with his wife Megan and daughters Charlotte and Ellis.
