The Mustangs’ offense averaged 30.90 points per game, 415.7 total yards per game, and 5.8 yards per play, while passing for 245 yards per game with 22 touchdowns and only 11 interceptions. Quarterback Dillon Sterling-Cole was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Year after throwing for 2,130 yards and 20 touchdowns and completed 169 of 299 passes. Prior to a COVD-19 shortened season in 2020, Midwestern State finished 5-6 and 3-5 in Lone Star Conference play as Mornhinweg helped guide an offense that totaled 364.1 yards per game and passed for 238.9 yards per game, along with 14 passing touchdowns (184-373).
Mornhinweg began his collegiate coaching career by spending one season as a Graduate Assistant at Ohio State in 2018. Under Head Coach Urban Meyer and Offensive Coordinator Ryan Day, Mornhinweg worked with the running backs, the Buckeyes finished 13-1 overall, ranked as high as No. 3 in both the FBS College Football Playoff and Associated Press polls, won the Big Ten title game, and earned a berth in the Rose Bowl, where they defeated Washington 28-23.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Mornhinweg saw action in 17 games with 12 starts as a quarterback at Columbia in both 2015 and 2016. He completed 190 of 334 passes (56.4 percent) for 1,653 yards and eight touchdowns in his two seasons. He transferred to Columbia after spending three seasons at Florida (2012-14).
