Field Hockey Defeats Yale 1-0 for First Ivy Win

Branich scored 1:57 into the game on a perfectly placed corner by Courtney Robinson (CC-Ardmore, Pa.) and Erin Wesseldine (CC-Virginia Beach, Va.). Robinson pushed the ball to the top of the circle, where Wesseldine stopped it and pushed to Branich. Branich blasted a shot that ricocheted off a defender's stick and popped up over the diving Yale goalie.
The Lions' defensive line of Wesseldine, Branich, Erin Bogue (CC-Haverford, Pa.) and Ashley McMasters (CC-Virginia Beach, Va.) kept the Bulldogs busy, deflecting shots and passes, but Yale out-shot Columbia 19-8. The teams were tied 6-6 in corners.
Kristina George (CC-Encinitas, Calf.) and first-year Gena Miller (CC-St. Louis Mo.) split time in goal for the Lions, with George finishing with three saves and Miller totaling five.
Seven wins marks the second-most in Columbia history, while Wesseldine only needs one more assist to tie the Columbia single-season assist record.
The Lions return to action on Sunday, when they travel to Rutgers for a 1 p.m. game.
