Men's Swimming and Diving Stays Perfect In Duals, Wins 197.5-102.5 at Penn

PHILADELPHIA -Columbia placed first in 12 of 16 events to defeat Penn, 197.5-102.5, and improve to 4-0 overall, 3-0 in the Ivy League.
The Lions burst out to a 42-13 lead after three events by taking first in the 200 medley relay, first and second in the 1000 free, and first, second and third in the 200 free. In the opening event, juniors Luke Fitzpatrick and Michael Nelson, senior Ben Neuwirth and first-year Steve Ko swam 1:35.78 to win by nearly a full second.
Sophomore Henning Fog and first-year Kevin Wakefield swam 9:42.69 and 9:43.07, respectively, in the 1000 to finish more than 10 seconds ahead of the Quakers' top competitor.
Junior Tobin White (1:41.32), first-year Hyun Lee (1:42.18) and junior Jake Abbott (1:45.37) swept the top three positions in the 200 free. The Lions actually had the top five finishers in the event as Adam Lehenbauer and Mitch Newman touched fourth and fifth, but only a team's top three competitors are permitted to score in an event.

Penn (3-3, 0-3 Ivy) surged over the next three events to outscore the Lions 39.5-17.5 and pull within seven, 59.5-52.5.
However, the Lions placed first in nine of the 10 final events, including each of the last six.
In four of those final 10 events, Columbia swept all of the top three places. Lee (45.82), Ko (48.05) and senior Rusty Corley (48.45) swept the 100 free; first-years Cedric Cheung-Lau (1:56.34), Zach Glassman (2:00.25) and John Dragelin (2:01.01) went one-two-three in the 200 individual medley; Cheung-Lau (4:40.40), Abbott (4:41.20) and Fog (4:43.34) were the top three in the 500 free; and in the 100 fly, Neuwirth (51.48), sophomore Luke Wang (53.33) and first-year David Collier (53.58) were the first three to the wall.
Additionally, Glassman (2:07.98) and Nelson (2:08.22) took the top two spots in the 200 breast.
In the diving events, sophomore Justin Reardon won both the one-meter (293.70) and 3m (299.63) boards.
The Lions ended the meet with a triumph in the 200 free relay in 1:24.81. The Lions' top foursome was made up of Lee, Corley, Ko and White.
Columbia is off for exams and the semester break and returns to action at home vs. Dartmouth on Sunday, January 15 at 1 p.m.
