BOSTON, MASS. ? Boston may be a hot tourist attraction, but not for the Columbia women's tennis players. They'd be more than happy to see Boston appear on a State Department “Do Not Visit” list, for that's exactly how they feel about the city.
On Saturday, February 3, Columbia lost at Boston College, 6-1, while on Sunday, the Boston University Terriers dealt the Lions a 7-0 defeat.
“We're going to get past this and keep going,” assistant coach Manisha Patel said. “We've got to move on.”
In running its record to 3-0, B.U. took all three doubles matches to gain the doubles point, and then won five of the six singles matches in just two sets. Two of the five went to a second-set tiebreaker, but Francine Whu won one of those, defeating junior Angela Hendry at second singles, 6-1, 7-6 (8-6), and Danielle Abraham took the other, beating sophomore Lauren Shearer, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), at No. 5 singles.
Columbia appeared to be off to a great start in singles, as senior Milena Kachar won the opening set from B.U.'s number one, Erin Katims, by a 6-2 score. Katims, however, rallied to take the next two sets from Kachar, both by 6-4 scores.
The women return to New York for their next match, as part of a tennis doubleheader with the Columbia men. The women play Maryland-Baltimore County at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center at 3:30, following the men's match with Radford, which begins at noon.
“We'll learn from this weekend,” Coach Patel said, “but we are excited about coming back to New York and our first home match.”
