NEW YORK -- Nine newcomers will take the pitch for head coach Leo Chappel in 2007, including Rutgers transfer Fredrik Kongsli. Kongsli, a defensive midfielder, comes to Morningside Heights after a year at Rutgers and with international experience in his native Norway.
Along with first-years Bayo Adafin, Pepe Carotenuto, Alex Contratto, Hayden Johns and Jakob Jurgensen, Columbia's roster also will be bolstered by senior Ross Myers, junior Patrick Huston, sophomore Isidore Smart and Kongsli.
"Fredrik just doesn't make mistakes," Chappel said. "With him, [Tom] Heinbockel, [James] Pounder and Myers, our back line should be shored up and pretty solid."
Myers joins the Lion squad after three years at Oberlin, where he was an all-conference defender after starting all of his team's 18 matches last year. Huston played football for two years at Columbia before joining the team in the spring. Smart is a tall defender who also joined the team in the spring.
The Lions will open the 2007 season at #5 Virginia on Friday, August 31 at 7:30 p.m.
