WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. -- The Columbia men's soccer team dropped its third consecutive decision on Wednesday afternoon, falling 3-0 at Monmouth at The Great Lawn in West Long Branch, N.J.
The Lions had an opportunity with a corner kick in the early going, with first-year midfielder Mike Mazzullo taking the chance in the seventh minute. Mazzullo would then attempt a shot 10 seconds later that was blocked by a defender. Less than five minutes later, Monmouth mounted an attack that led to the game's first goal. Chase Barbieri tallied his sixth goal of the season as he went low far post off an assist from Ryan Kinne.
In the 27th minute, the Hawks would double their lead on a rebound chance. A header off a corner kick by Monmouth's Daniel Bostick was denied by Columbia's first-year goalkeeper Alex Aurrichio. But Aurrichio could not gather the ball cleanly, and Barbieri was right there to clean up and finish for his second goal of the contest.
Kinne would again do damage in the second half, this time scoring the game's third and final goal and giving Monmouth a 3-0 lead in the 55th minute.
The Lions would attempt to rally for a goal minutes later. Sophomore Bayo Adafin had a pair of shots in a one minute, 22 second span, one of which was blocked and the other denied by Hawks goalie Bryan Meredith. Adafin would finish with a team-high three shots.
Columbia will look to snap its three-game losing skid as it begins Ivy League play with a road contest at Brown on Saturday, Oct. 4, at 7 p.m.
