NEW YORK, N.Y. ? Columbia's Mr. Consistency of 2008, Bogdan Borta, continued his near-perfect play with victories in both singles and doubles to lead the Columbia men's tennis team to a 5-2 Ivy League victory over Princeton in the final home match of the season.
Borta combined with Jon Wong for an 8-5 win at first doubles over the Tigers' George Carpeni and Alex Vuckovic. Senior Mark Clemente, playing his final match at the Dick Savitt Tennis Center, then teamed with Kevin Kung for an 8-5 win at second singles. Although Columbia lost third doubles, 8-6, the Lions captured the doubles point.
Princeton, lacking strength through the whole lineup, has suffered through a disappointing season. But the Tigers' 1-2 punch of Peter Capkovic and George Carpeni has been strong.
On Friday, they both won. Jon Wong lost to Capkovic, a Slovakian who has a world ranking, 6-3, 6-4, and Carpeni, who hails from England, beat Clemente, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-6 in the super tiebreaker).
That would be all the Tigers would tally, though. Borta led the march, tripping Ryan Kim at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-2. Senior Jared Drucker, also playing his final home match, bounced back from a loss in doubles to win at fourth singles, 6-4, 6-3 over Vuckovic.
Yet another senior, Justin Chow, made his final home appearance a winning one, as he beat Jonathan Leslie, 6-4, 6-4. First-year Sho Matsumoto captured a win at sixth singles when he beat Ilya Trubov, 6-2, 6-2.
Columbia concludes its season Sunday, April 21, against Penn in Philadelphia. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
