Harvard Holds Off Lacrosse, 12-8

NEW YORK -- Harvard scored four of the final five goals of the first half and led the rest of the way in a 12-8 triumph over the Lions on Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium.

Brittany Shannon scored twice with 12:46 and 10:55 left in the opening half to tie the score, 4-4, but the Crimson answered with three straight scores, including a goal and an assist by Kaitlin Martin. Glynn notched a goal, assisted by Gabrielle Geronimos, to pull within two, 7-5, but the Crimson closed the first-half scoring with a goal by Tara Shoen with just 22 seconds showing.

Martin opened the second half with a goal for a 9-5 Crimson advantage, and Columbia would not get closer than three goals the rest of the contest. The teams traded goals for each of the scores in the second half, including one by Shannon and two by Glynn.

Shannon, who was 3-for-3 on free position shots, finished the game with four goals to lead all scorers, and Glynn had three to pull within two* of tying the school record of 40 held by Kate Lombard '07CC and Carrie Anderer '06CC. First-year Lizzie Lee had the Lions' other goal in the first half.

Emma Mintz had another strong showing in goal with at season-high 15 saves. She added five ground balls for the second straight game.

Columbia honored its five seniors before the game. It was the final weekend and final league game for Marisa Marcellino, Ashley Mehl, Samantha Morris, Dana Riley and Kristen Teatom

Columbia's final two contests of 2008 are home. On Monday, April 21, Columbia hosts Cal at 1 p.m. and on Wednesday, April 23, the Lions take on Bucknell in the season finale at 7 p.m.

* It was erroneously reported following the Fairfield game that Glynn needed only two goals to tie entering today's game. gocolumbialions.com regrets the error.
