Lacrosse Concludes 2008 With 8-7 Triumph Over Bucknell

NEW YORK -- Holly Glynn scored the game-winner with 3:57 left to play to lift Columbia to an 8-7 triumph over Bucknell in the season finale for both teams on Robert K. Kraft Field at Lawrence A. Wien Stadium. The Lions held the Bison (6-9) to just over half their season average of 13.4 goals per game.

Glynn created her own shot, starting from 20 yards out and weaving to the left side of the circle to fire a shot into the back of the goal for her third goal of the game. Columbia benefited from Bucknell being in the midst of three-minutes short handed after collecting its fourth yellow card of the game with 5:36 remaining.

With 11:31 left in the game, the Lions found themselves down for the first time in the second half when Chelsea Peters shook her defender and scored from the right side for a 7-6 Bucknell advantage. At 9:06, Gabrielle Geronimos sent a low, scorching shot into the cage from the top of the circle to even the score, 6-6.

Bucknell had posession with just under six minutes to play and the score still tied, but turned it over on an illegally propelled shot, resulting in the fourth card. The Lions possessed almost the entire final 5:30 of the contest, and, following Glynn's game-winner, the Lions played keepaway for the second time in three days to earn the victory.

The Lions trailed early, 2-0, when Bucknell scored at 26:36 and 19:58. The Lions got on the board at just under a quarter of the way into the game when Marisa Marcellino scored from Glynn. Marcellino either scored or assisted on the Lions' first four goals. She notched her second goal on a free position at 13:01 to knot the score, 2-2. Bucknell took a 3-2 lead on Bonnie Buechel's second goal of the half, but Glynn and Marcellino scored to end the half and give the Lions their first lead of the contest entering halftime. Marcellino's goal with 1:10 on the clock was a nifty feed on a free position from Geronimos.

Neither team led by more than two goals at any point in the contest. Glynn and Marcellino eached finished with three goals and an assist, and Geronimos had a goal and two assists. Brittany Shannon was the other Lion goal-scorer. Lizzie Lee had three draw controls. Emma Mintz made three saves in goal. For Bucknell, Buechel had three goals and Chelsea Peters added two.

The game was the final collegiate lacrosse outing for seniors Marcellino, Ashley Mehl, Sam Morris, Dana Riley and Kristen Teatom.

The Lions conclude the season 5-10, and 5-3 in nonconference play, with two triumphs to conclude the spring.
