NEW YORK -- For the second straight game, the Columbia University men's soccer team fell in double-overtime, this time to Long Island, 1-0, at Columbia Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The contest saw each team jockeying for advantages over the course of the first two halves. Each team had 12 shots going into extra time and both had seven corner kicks. Near the end of the second half, the Lions had a few opportunities to take the lead but could not convert.
The first overtime session saw an entertaining display of offensive chances. With time dwindling, a corner kick by Hayden Johns set up a chance for the Lions. Senior Scott Strickland sent a shot toward net but a Blackbird defender snuck in front of the attempt and knocked it away from net.
From there, the game went to a second extra frame and the first shot of the period by LIU proved costly for Columbia. After a scrum in front of the net, the ball deflected off a Lions defender and found the foot of freshman Josh Maley, who sent his shot to the left side and into the back of the net for the game-winner.
Senior Felipe Castrillon played well for Columbia, registering a team-best three shots. First-year goalie Alex Aurrichio had seven saves in the loss, which drops the Lions to 2-4-1 on the year. The Blackbirds improve to 4-4.
The Columbia men's soccer team moves to the road for its next three games, beginning with a tilt at Monmouth on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 3 p.m.
