HANOVER, N.H. - The Columbia field hockey team dropped a heartbreaking 2-1 contest to Dartmouth in Ivy League action on Saturday, October 24.
The two teams battled in the opening 35 minutes of play, yet neither was able to score. The Big Green outshot the Lions 6-1 in the opening stanza, but Christie O'Hara came up with two big stops to keep the game scoreless. Columbia's best chance of the half came at 4:29 when Christine Buszczak collected a ball and managed to fire a shot that went just wide of the goal.
Dartmouth opened the scoring at 36:34 when Kelly Hood scored the first of her two goals off a corner. The Lions had their chances to even the score with back-to-back corners of their own at 41:45 and 43:14, but both times Gabby Kozlowski's shots were stopped by Jenna Stearns.
Columbia finally knotted the game at 1-1 when Maggie O'Connor fired a diving shot to beat Stearns. It marked her first goal of the season while Kozlowski was credited with the assist.
Less than five minutes later, Dartmouth's Hood scored what proved to be the game winner on her second goal off an identical corner at 52:58.
Erin Conway took over in goal for O'Hara and made two key saves to keep the game in reach for the Lions. O'Hara finished with four saves in the loss.
Columbia (6-7, 1-3 Ivy League) returns to action on Sunday, October 25 when it plays Vermont at 2 p.m.
