Garrison's Goal Lifts Field Hockey Over Vermont, 1-0

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Julia Garrison's unassisted goal at 47:45 proved to be the difference as the Columbia field hockey team defeated Vermont 1-0 on Sunday, October 25.  With the win, the Lions even their record at 7-7 overall, and close out the non-conference portion of its schedule.

"It was great to see our team bounce back after a tough loss yesterday," said head coach Jana Woolley.  "Today, our team fought and competed hard."

The first half was a defensive battle that saw a combined total of four shots in the opening 35 minutes of play, with Vermont holding a 3-1 edge.  Columbia's lone shot in the first half was turned away by Brooke Crane, as the teams entered the break scoreless.

The Lions came out with a new energy in the second half, outshooting the home team 10-0 and holding a 4-0 advantage in penalty corners. Despite Crane making five huge stops to keep her team in the game, it was Garrison who managed to crack Vermont and put the Lions ahead, 1-0.  The junior vice captain carried the ball into the circle from the right side and fired a shot past Crane stick side.

"We were relentless with our pressure which helped create scoring chances for us," said Woolley.  "Julia had a great shot from the top which she was able to finish on to give us the game winner."

Seven different Columbia players had shots in the game, led by Garrison who had four.  Erin Conway posted her first shutout win of the season, while Crane made six saves in the loss.

"In the backfield, Conway played great in goal for us," added Wolley.  "Hannah SmithJanelle Greene, Bridget DeSandis and Caitlin Mullins all had great games today. They played very smart in the back, and at times really came up with some huge tackles."

Columbia (7-7, 1-3 Ivy League) returns home on Wednesday, October 28 when it hosts Penn in an Ivy League match up at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue at 4 p.m.
