HANOVER, N.H. - The Columbia men's soccer team dominated possession and scored two well-executed second-half goals to deal #15 Dartmouth its first Ivy league loss of the season. Columbia improved to 4-7-1, 2-2 Ivy League, while Dartmouth fell to 8-4-1, 3-1 Ivy League.
Both teams had their chances early, but solid play in goal by Alex Aurrichio (Columbia) and Sean Donovan (Dartmouth) rendered the game scoreless at the half. Aurrichio saved two close-range shots, while Donovan punched two corners out of play.
The Lions controlled possession a good portion of the first half, but came out and intensified the pressure to open the second half. Columbia took the lead in the 69th minute on an impressive goal by Bayo Adafin. Junior Peppe Carotenuto passed the ball to a waiting Adafin. It looked like a Dartmouth defender tapped a piece of the ball, but Adafin collected the ball and flicked it past the diving Big Green keeper.
The Lions scored five minutes later when Hayden Johns sent a beautiful cross to Adafin who one-touched it to a charging Nick Ayers for his first collegiate goal.
Aurrichio finished with six saves in goal, while Donovan totaled five.
The Lions return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Lafayette for a 7 p.m. game.
