EASTON, Pa. - Trailing Lafayette 1-0 at the half, the Columbia field hockey team came out on a mission in the second period. The Lions converted on four of their six second half penalty corners to defeat the Leopards 4-1 on Wednesday, October 7.
Lafayette struck first 13:03 into the game when Deanna DiCroce converted on the Leopards' only shot of the half. Columbia's defense buckled down, while the offense managed just three shots in the opening 35 minutes of play.
Lafayette opened the second half with three shots, but the Lions were awarded a corner at 47:38 setting up the first of four second half goals. Christine Buszczak sent the ball to Julia Garrison at the top of the circle who fired a shot past Kelsey Anderson to even the score at 1-1. Less than three minutes later, Columbia scored what proved to be the game-winner when Buszczak once again got the assist, this time setting up Leti Freaney for her first goal of the season.
The Lions continued to put the pressure on Lafayette's defense getting off three shots, including one that hit the post. Carson Christus pushed Columbia's lead to two when she redirected a shot by Garrison. Just two minutes later, Katie DeSandis and Caitlin Mullins teamed up to put the Lions ahead, 4-1.
Christie O'Hara got the win in goal for Columbia making two saves. For the game, the Lions outshot the Leopards 13-4 and held a 9-5 advantage in penalty corners.
The Lions (4-5, 1-2 Ivy League) return to action on Sunday, October 11 when they host Holy Cross at the Columbia Field Hockey Venue at 1 p.m.
