NEW YORK - The Columbia men's swimming & diving program had a strong showing against Army in today's meet at Uris Pool, as the Lions beat the Black Knights 171-129. With the win, Columbia improves to 2-2 in overall dual meets, and handed Army its first loss of the season.
Columbia opened the meet with a win, as first-year diver Micahaelangelo Borghi took first in the three meter competition, with 265.13 points. The Lions followed that up with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Johnny Bailey, Eric Tang, Bruno Esquen and Adam Powell took first in 1:34.27.
Columbia's lead grew even larger after the 1000 free, as the Lions took the top three spots. First-year Sean Mackenzie took first in 9:42.10, followed by sophomore Chester Dols in second (9:44.79) and sophomore Alex Smith in third (9:46.60). Senior co-captain Darren Pagan followed that with a first place finish in the 200 free, coming in at 1:43.72.
The Black Knights had first place finishes in the 100 back and 100 breast, but in an exciting race, the Lions got back on top in the 200 fly. Sophomore Robert Eyckmans took first in 1:55.34, and senior Nick Barren edged an Army swimmer by a touch for second, coming in at 1:56.40. Adam Powell continued the wins for Columbia as he had an easy first place finish in the 50 free, coming in at 20.54, almost a full second ahead of his competition.
One-meter diving saw first-years Jason Collazo and Michaelangelo Borghi finish second and third, with scores of 254.10 and 250.72, and Powell opened the second half of the swim meet with a 46.03 win in the 100 free. Pagan and first-year Patrick Dougherty took first and third in the 200 back, in 1:54.94 and 1:55.73, and senior Ross Ramone had a big win in the 200 breast, taking the top spot in 2:08.85.
First-year Sean Mackenzie had his second win of the day in a distance event, as he won the 500 free in 4:44.23, which would be the last first-place finish of the day for the Lions, as Army won the 100 fly, 200 IM and 400 free relay. But Columbia came out on top in the end, winning the meet by a final score of 171-129.
Up next, the Lions will travel to local rival Fordham's pool, to take on the Rams Monday, November 23 at 6 p.m.
