GARDEN CITY, N.Y. -- Junior Bayo Adafin gave the Columbia University men's soccer team a 1-0 lead with a tally in the 54th minute, but Adelphi would score the equalizing and go-ahead goals eight and a half minutes apart to defeat the Lions 2-1 on Tuesday evening.
After a back and forth affair in the first half, Columbia opened the scoring in the 54th minute when first-year Will Stamatis' shot struck the post, came back towards him and was then deflected to the waiting feet of Adafin. The junior forward found the upper left corner of the net, giving the Lions a 1-0 edge.
Adelphi did not take long to respond, scoring less then eight minutes later when Brandon Stoneham collected a ball and found the back of the Lion net, knotting the game at 1-1.
The Panthers' Issa Tall scored the winning tally in the 70th minute courtesy of Johann Craan. Craan played a through ball to Tall, who beat the Lion defense and then curved the ball around a diving Alexander Aurrichio to secure the win for Adelphi.
Adafin closed with a game-high six shots for Columbia, who outshot the Panthers 10-9 on the match.
The Lions will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 7 for their final home match of the season against Harvard. The match will mark the final contest at Columbia Soccer Stadium for four Columbia student-athletes: Gaby Da Silva, Steven Keker, James Prince and Ryan Scully.
