NEW YORK -- Former Columbia University softball standout Maiya Chard-Yaron '06 competed in a pair of international tournaments for the Israeli National Team this summer. Chard-Yaron took part in the 18th Maccabiah Games, which were held on July 21-23 in Israel, and then traveled to Belgium to participate in the European Softball B-Pool Championships on July 27-August 1.
A first team All-Ivy League selection as a senior in 2006, Chard-Yaron was a standout for the Israeli team at the Maccabiah Games, batting .412 over six contests and scoring five runs. The utility player also pitched a great game against eventual runner-up Canada, tossing six innings and allowing just two earned runs while striking out five in a 5-4 loss.
At the European B-Pool Championships, which are run parallel to the European Softball Championships A-Pool in Valencia, Spain, Chard-Yaron and Israel got off to a hot start, winning their first four games of pool play. The team would finish in fourth place out of 11 teams, which matched its finish from the 2007 European Championships in Croatia.
Chard-Yaron, a two-time captain for the Lions in 2005 and 2006, ranks second all-time in Columbia softball history in triples (6), third in runs scored (74), and held the single-season hits record of 57 (set in 2006) until recent graduate Keli Leong registered 58 hits this past season to surpass that mark.
