First-year pitcher also earns Co-Rookie of the Week honors
PRINCETON, N.J. – First-year starting pitcher Mads Lawson was named the Ivy League Pitcher of the Week for the third time this season, as announced by the conference office on Tuesday. The native of Murieta, Calif., was also named Co-Rookie of the Week.
Lawson went 2-0 with a 1.62 ERA pair of complete games as the Lions took the series from Penn on the road. In 13.0 innings pitched, Lawson scattered three earned runs, with a walk, while striking out 13.
On Friday, Lawson went the distance, scattering nine hits and two earned runs over seven complete. After surrendering two runs in the bottom of the first inning, she stymied the Quakers the rest of the way.
On Sunday, Lawson was even better, holding Penn to a run on seven hits over six innings of work; she also struck out eight. The one earned run extended her streak to 17 consecutive starts surrendering two runs or fewer. The eight strikeouts give her 120 on the year, which is now the sixth most in a single season in Columbia history.
The two complete games give her 17 on the year, which is tied for the 10th most in a single season at Columbia. Lawson improves to 13-6 on the year. She has now won eight consecutive starts. This marks the third time this season Lawson has been named the Pitcher of the Week.
"Mads is having a real special season, but I'm not at all surprised," head coach Jennier Teague said. "She has a competitive mindset and a work ethic that is the core of what we try to instill in our program. In just her first year, she's really taken that to heart. It's a joy to coach her and a joy to watch her compete day in and day out."
Columbia returns to action on Saturday when the Lions host Harvard for a three-game series beginning at 12:30 p.m.
