NEW YORK -- The Columbia men's soccer team returns from last weekend's trip down south for a match against local counterpart Long Island University on Saturday afternoon. The match, which begins at 1 p.m., will be held on LIU's Brooklyn campus. Following the match against the Blackbirds, the Lions will begin a six-match homestand on Friday, Sept. 18 against Saint Peter's.
Scouting the Blackbirds
LIU enters the weekend with a 1-2 record and is coming off the first road win over a California team in school history against Santa Clara at the UC Irvine College Classic. Redshirt senior Adam Kelemet and freshman Jakeem Johnson were the goal scorers against the Broncos. Kelemet leads the squad with a goal and an assist, while sophomore Steve Jakubowski has a team-high six shots.
Pair of Lions Make Duke/Nike Classic All-Tournament Team
Senior defender Ryan Scully and sophomore goalkeeper Alexander Aurrichio were each named to the Duke/Nike Classic All-Tournament team for their exceptional play over two matches last weekend. Scully battled through nagging injuries to help hold a pair of nationally-ranked teams to three goals over two games, while Aurrichio backlined the defense and notched 10 saves in the tournament.
The Prince of Assist
Senior James Prince played in his first career match at Columbia against Duke last Friday. He also came away with his first assist as a Lion, as his half-volley shot attempt deflected right to teammate Bayo Adafin, who finished for a goal and put Columbia on top 1-0 in the first half.
Local Rivals Have History
Despite having played just twice in the past 12 seasons, Columbia and Long Island have rich soccer histories with one another, dating back to the late 1970's and early 1980's. The two teams have met a total of 20 times, with the Lions holding a slight 9-8-3 edge. In 1978, the Blackbirds opened the series with a 2-1 win and were led by then-head coach Dieter Ficken.
The following year, Ficken was hired as Columbia's head man and tied his former team, 1-1, in 1979 before defeating Long Island, 2-1, in 1980. All told, the two teams have met three times in NCAA Tournament matches. LIU won in overtime, 1-0, in 1981 and earned a 3-0 decision the following year as the Blackbirds went on to the tournament quarterfinals. The Lions earned a 3-2 overtime victory in the first round of the 1985 NCAA Tournament.
