ITHACA, N.Y. - The Columbia field hockey team fell to Cornell in an overtime thriller, 2-1, on Saturday afternoon. The Big Red's Olivia Boyd tipped a shot with no time remaining in the second overtime period to lift Cornell over the Lions in Ivy League action.
In a defensive battle, the two teams remained scoreless after the first half of play. Cornell outshot Columbia 6-3 and held a 5-1 advantage in corners.
The Big Red struck first at 54:28 when Catie De Stio stole the ball from a Columbia defender resulting in a breakaway enabling her to slip a shot past Christie O'Hara.
The Lions offense turned it up a notch and evened the score at 1-1 on a penalty stroke by first-year Katie DeSandis at 63:58. Despite Columbia outshooting the Big Red 13-7 in the second half, regulation ran out forcing the two teams into overtime.
