NEW YORK - The Columbia men's swimming & diving team lost a hard-fought meet to Brown in North Dartmouth, Mass., tonight, 168-138. With the loss, the Lions now stand at 4-4 overall, and 1-4 in the Ivy League.
Columbia opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Johnny Bailey, Eric Tang, Bruno Esquen and Adam Powell took first with a time of 1:33.69. First-year Sean MacKenzie followed that up with a win in the 1000 free, as he took first in 9:35.59. Sophomore Chester Dols earned points for the Lions coming in third, in 9:44.25.
Brown managed to take the lead with top finishes in the 100 back, 200 free and 100 breast, before the Lions came roaring back, sweeping the top three spots in the 200 fly. Esquen took the top spot in 1:55.04, just ahead of teammate Robert Eyckmans, who hit the wall in 1:55.50. Rounding out the top three was senior captain Nick Barron, w ho came in just behind Eyckmans in 1:55.60.
Junior Adam Powell remained undefeated in the sprint events, as he won both the 50 and 100 free. In the 50, he took the event with a time of 20.45, while winning the 100 in 46.04. But his was the last win that Columbia would see for a stretch, as the Bears took first in the 200 back, 200 breast, 500 free and 100 fly, increasing their lead. Senior captain Darren Pagan was the next Lion who would score big points for Columbia, as he won the 200 IM in 1:54.19, but a Brown sweep of second through fourth negated the point gain for the Lions. And in the last event of the night, the 400 free relay, Brown won the event, just ahead of the Columbia team of Patrick Dougherty, Jordan Kobb, Darren Pagan and Adam Powell.
Up next, the Lions head to Annapolis, Md., to take on former EISL rival Navy, in a 2 p.m. meet, Friday, February 5.
