
Men's Swimming & Diving Bounces Back With Win Over Army, 174-126

NEW YORK – The Columbia men's swimming & diving team bounced back from a Friday night loss to Harvard, to beat Army in West Point, N.Y. Saturday, 174-126. Senior Adam Powell, junior Bruno Esquen, sophomore Sean MacKenzie and first-year Eric Traub were all double winners for the Lions.
Columbia opened the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay, as Patrick Dougherty, John-Howard Sidman, Kai Schultz and Powell took the top spot. The next event was MacKenzie's first of the day, as he finished first by seven seconds, with a time of 9:31.90. Traub then took second in the 200 free in 1:42.98, earning valuable points for the Lions.
Esquen had a win in the 200 butterfly, coming in at 1:52.85, and in the next event, Powell took the top spot in the 50 free, winning with a time of 20.39. Divers Jason Collazo, Michaelangelo Borghi and David Levkoff went 2-3-4 in the 1m diving competition to keep Columbia ahead, and Powell earned his second win right after the diving break, as he won thet 100 free in 45.15.
Dougherty was the next to come in first for the Lions, as he won the 200 yard backstroke, with a time of 1:52.28, beating his Army opponents by two seconds. First-year Traub had a win in the 200 breaststroke, coming in at 2:08.55, followed by teammate Robert Eyckmans, who had the second place spot by a hair, in 2:08.58. MacKenzie earned his second win of the day in the 500 free, as he won in 4:37.67, and Esquen had the top finish in the 100 fly, with a time of 50.08.
Collazo had a second place finish in the 3m dive, with 277.13 points, and Traub followed that up with a top finish in the 200 IM, winning with a time of 1:55.98. The men wrapped up the meet with a win, as first-year Daniel Tan, Dougherty, sophomore John Wright and Powell took the top spot in the 400 free relay, winning by just hundredths of a second, in 3:09.33.
Up next, the Lions have a bit of a break, before heading off to the first championship-style meet of the season. Friday, December 3 to Sunday, December 5, the team will take part in the Princeton Invitational, in Princeton, N.J.
