NEW YORK - The Columbia men's swimming & diving team notched a win over Ivy League rival Dartmouth in the last home meet of the season, beating the Big Green on Senior Day, 156-144.
It was the last meet of the year in Uris Pool, and head coach Jim Bolster and his squad used the meet as a chance to celebrate the departing class of 2010. The Lions honored seniors Nick Barron, Adam Bulkley, Robert Frawley, Jordan Kobb, Darren Pagan, Philippe Putzeys, Ross Ramone and Eric Tang throughout the night. And it was a great meet for the Lions to remember, as Columbia beat Dartmouth handily.
The divers got the meet started off on the right foot, as they took the top three spots in the 3 meter competition. First-year Jason Collazo took the top spot with 310.95 points, followed by junior David Levkoff, who took second with 267.75 points, and first-year Michaelangelo Borghi, who placed third with 234.68 points.
The 200 medley relay also had an appropriate finish, as an all-senior Columbia squad took the top spot. Seniors Pagan, Tang, Barron and Kobb teamed up to win the event in 1:35.27. The 500 free saw Alex Smith place second in 4:45.87, just ahead of teammate Robert Eyckmans, who took third place with a time of 4:47.83.
Two first-years took the top spots for Columbia in the 200 IM, as Sean MacKenzie and Patrick Dougherty took second and third, respectively. MacKenzie came in at 1:57.54, while Dougherty was just behind him in 1:57.82. In the 100 back, sophomore Johnny Bailey took second place with a time of 52.19, just ahead of senior Darren Pagan, who took third in 52.87.
Senior Eric Tang took the top spot for the Lions in the 100 breast, beating the field by almost two seconds, with a time of 57.64, while sophomore John-Howard Sidman took second in 59.52. In the 50 free, junior Adam Powell had yet another win to remain undefeated in the event, taking first in 20.88.
First-year Collazo was a dual winner for the Lions, as he also took the top spot in the 1 meter diving competition, with 285.98 points. Levkoff placed third, with 261.68 points. And Tang joined him as a multiple winner when he took the top spot in the 200 breast, with a time of 2:06.77. Classmate Ramone took second in the event, with a time of 2:08.12. Pagan added another first place finish for the Lions in the 100 fly, as he won in a time of 50.71, just ahead of Dartmouth's Albert Roth.
With the completion of the dual meet season, the Lions begin a period of resting and tapering, as they start to prepare for the Ivy League Championships. That meet, which will be held in Princeton, N.J., will take place over three days, Thursday, March 4 to Saturday, March 6.
