BOCA RATON, FLA. - The Columbia women's tennis team earned a win over Florida Atlantic Thursday, beating the Owls, 6-1 to improve to 7-7 overall. The Lions swept the doubles point and took wins in five of the six singles spots to earn the victory.
In doubles, Columbia had two 8-3 wins, as Natasha Makarova and Chelsea Davis beat the No. 2 FAU pair 8-3, and Eliza Matache and Natalia Christenson won at No. 3, 8-3. The first-year duo of Nicole Bartnik and Katarina Kovacevic made it a sweep with their 8-6 win in the No. 1 doubles spot, giving the Lions an early 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, four of Columbia's five wins came in straight sets. Bartnik won in the No. 1 singles spot, beating FAU's Justine Humair, 6-3, 6-0, while Makarova won at No. 2 over Natasha Basma, 6-2, 6-1. First-year Davis also had a straight sets win at No. 3, as she beat Cassie Bergeson, 6-2, 6-2, while Kovacevic's win at No. 6 came 6-3, 6-2, over Virginia Augustin.
Matache had the lone three-set win for the Lions, as she beat Erika Mrazkova 6-3, 5-7, 10-8 in a super tiebreaker, while senior Carling Donovan had a hard-fought three-set loss at No. 5, for FAU's only point. Donovan battled back in the second set, but fell in a super tiebreaker, 7-5, 5-7, 10-6.
Up next for the Lions is the conclusion of their spring break trip, Nova Southeastern, who Columbia will face off against, Friday, March 19 at 10 a.m.
