NEW YORK – The Ivy League championship-winning Columbia men's tennis team had three players named to the All-Ivy League team this spring, as senior co-captains Mihai Nichifor and Jonathan Wong were both unanimous first team selections for both singles and doubles, while sophomore Haig Schneiderman was a second-team honoree.
Nichifor led the selections for Columbia, as the senior was a perfect 7-0 in Ivy League single matches this season, playing in the No. 2 spot. Combined with his junior year effort, Nichifor graduates with a perfect 14-0 Ivy League singles record. Overall, Nichifor compiled a 15-4 record in dual matches.
His co-captain Wong, the 2007 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, also earned unanimous first team All-Ivy League honors in singles. Wong went 5-2 in the No. 1 spot this year in Ivy League competition, 12-7 overall, and lead the Lions to the third Ivy League team championship of his career. That win made Wong the first player in Columbia men's tennis history to accomplish such a feat.
Nichifor and Wong also earned unanimous first-team accolades as a doubles pair. The duo, playing in the No. 1 spot, went 5-2 in Ivy League action, 13-6 overall, including a 9-1 run to end the season.
Schneiderman, the 2009 Ivy League Rookie of the Year, also earned a nod from the League as he was selected to the second team. Schneiderman had the most wins in dual matches of any singles player with 17, was a perfect 7-0 in Ivy League play in the No. 3 singles spot this season, and clinched the Ivy League title for the Lions with his match-sealing win against Princeton earlier this April.
