NEW YORK -- For the third straight week, a Columbia University softball player has earned an Ivy League award. On Tuesday, junior Maggie Johnson was named the Ivy League Player of the Week after batting .500 over four games while also picking up the win in the circle in the Lions' 10-5 victory over Brown on Sunday.
Last week, first-year Alison Lam was named Ivy Rookie of the Week and the week before, senior Dani Pineda became the first Lion since 2005 to garner Player of the Week accolades.
Johnson led the Lion offense over the weekend and in addition to her gaudy batting average, had four extra-base hits as the Lions opened Ivy League play with a pair of doubleheaders. The co-captain laced three doubles and hit a home run over four games, producing a .929 slugging percentage while also driving in seven runs.
The co-captain went 2-for-4 with three RBIs in a narrow 5-4 loss against Yale on Saturday, then helped Columbia to its first Ivy League victory of the season over Brown on Sunday by going 3-for-4 at the plate with a three-run double and a solo home run. The multi-talented player also picked up the win in the circle against the Bears, tossing 3 2/3 innings in relief while allowing just one hit and striking out one.
Columbia returns to action today with a non-conference doubleheader against Marist, before traveling north to face Dartmouth (Friday) and Harvard (Saturday) in conference twinbills.
