Mads Lawson tosses her 10th complete game of the season
HANOVER, N.H. – The Columbia softball team struck early, and Mads Lawson did the rest as the Lions took game one of the three-game series at Dartmouth, 4-1, on Friday afternoon at the Dartmouth Softball Park.
Columbia (11-16, 3-4 Ivy) got on the board in the top of the second when Eleni Katsivalis slapped a double into left field that knocked in Tatum Hubble and Savanna Messner. Sarah Mikami smashed a ball to short that plated a run to make it 3-0 Columbia.
The Lions finished the afternoon with four runs on eight hits.
The three-run cushion was more than enough for first-year starter Mads Lawson (6-6), who went the distance, scattering a run on four hits for her 10th complete game of the year. Lawson worked a quick 1-2-3 inning in the first and, after surrendering a pair of hits in the second, shut down the Big Green offense.
Lawson retired 11 in a row from the third inning until the sixth. She did get some exceptional defense behind her. Juju O'Brien started an inning-ending double play in the third, snatching a laser up the middle to start a 6-3 double play.
Dartmouth (5-14, 3-4 Ivy) made it interesting in the bottom of the seventh. A leadoff walk ended Lawson's run of 11 batters in a row retired. After getting a pop-up, Sydney Herrmann doubled to left field, driving in Justice Malone.
Lawson retired the next two batters, the last a strikeout, her fourth of the game.
Hubble led the Lions at the plate, going 3-for-3 with two runs scored. O'Brien extended her hitting streak to seven games after going 1-for-4 on the day. Katsivalis went 1-for-4. Savana Messner and Kyra Mason both drew walks and scored runs.
Charley Maddox (3-6) went the distance for the Big Green. She surrendered eight hits, four runs all earned, with three walks and a strikeout.
The series resumes on Saturday with a doubleheader. Game one is scheduled for 12:30 pm, with the nightcap to follow a half hour after the completion of game one.
