NEW YORK -- For the second time in three years, a Columbia University men's soccer player has been identified as a "Freshman to Watch" by College Soccer News. First-year midfielder David Najem was named one of 100 first-year players throughout the country that fans and media should keep an eye on in the 2010 season. Junior goalkeeper Alexander Aurrichio also made the list in 2008.
Najem enters Columbia following a decorated prep career which saw him score 54 goals and accumulate 146 points at Paramus Catholic High School. As a senior, Najem was named New Jersey High School Player of the Year by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and also earned NSCAA All-America honors. Najem plays his club soccer for the prestigious New York Red Bulls Academy.
The Lions, who return 11 starters and 20 letterwinners from last season's squad, begin the 2010 regular season against Sacred Heart on Saturday, Sept. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 4 p.m.
