NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Columbia women's tennis duo of Rima Asatrian and Kanika Vaidya stunned Hanna Yu and Ree Ree Li of Yale, to win the doubles draw at the United States Tennis Association (USTA)/Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Northeast Regional Championships at Yale's Cullman-Heyman Tennis Center Tuesday, Oct. 21.
Vaidya adds the championship to her extensive collegiate resume that includes the 2013 northeast singles crown, while Asatrian made her collegiate debut at the event in style. The twosome battled five squads, including three seeded and the 21st-ranked pair in the nation, along their five-day journey to the finals.
With the 6-2, 6-2, victory over the Bulldogs, the junior/first-year partners earned automatic entry into the 2014 USTA/ITA National Intercollegiate Indoor Championships Nov. 6-9 at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in Flushing Meadows, New York.
Asatrian and Vaidya and the Lions return to action Oct. 31-Nov. 2 when Columbia travels to Orlando, Florida, for the ESPN/Florida State Invitational.
