NEW YORK – The Columbia men's soccer team looks to end the season on a high note this Saturday, when Cornell comes to Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium for a 4 p.m. match on Senior Day.
Last Time Out
A late penalty kick was the difference for Harvard, when the Crimson knocked the Lions out of contention for an Ivy League title last time out.
Harvard drew a penalty kick with 6:30 left on the clock, and was able to get the ball into the net, to break the scoreless tie. Rhys Williams had a chance for the equalizer less than two minutes later, but Evan Mendez made the game-clinching save, as the Lions fell to 7-7-1 overall, and 2-3-1 in the Ivy League.
The Columbia back line could not have played better, allowing zero shots on goal throughout the 90 minutes of play. Mendez held steady all game for Harvard, stopping eight shots in the contest.
About the Big Red
The final opponent in the closing game of the 2014 season for Columbia comes against a 9-6-1 squad that has gone 2-4 in matches against the Ancient Eight. Cornell has dropped two straight contests, including a 3-0 loss to Dartmouth last Saturday.
The slumping Big Red are not without skill on both sides of the ball. Columbia will be on the lookout for one of the top scorers in the Ivy League in Conor Goepel, who has tallied six goals and three assists, while coming off the bench in 13-of-16 games. Peter Chodas leads the team in assists with five, while Zach Zagorski has only allowed 11 goals in 16 games.
All-Time Series
Columbia holds a 32-21-11 advantage in the series that dates back to the inaugural 1906 season for the Lions. Cornell has gotten the better of Columbia lately, as Head Coach Kevin Anderson is 0-3-2 in his career against the Big Red.
A Win Would Mean
A win for the Lions would give Columbia back-to-back eight win seasons, and back-to-back winning seasons for the first time since 2002-2003. With three points, the Lions could finish as high as fourth in the Ivy League.
