- Day 1 Recap
FLUSHING, N.Y. - On the second day of the 2014 USTA/ITA National Indoor Collegiate Championships at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Center the Columbia women's tennis team was represented on the singles and doubles consolation court.
Kanika Vaidya opened the day for the Lions competitors on the singles court. The junior was on the opposite side of the net as the second-seed in the back draw, Florida's Josie Kuhlman. The Gator took the first set 6-4 and Columbia's 85th-ranked player gave Kuhlman a battle in the second set, however, it was Kuhlman that came out on top 7-5 to seal the match victory.
In doubles Vaidya teamed up with first-year Rima Asatrian for a showdown with Kentucky's Nadia Ravita and Aldila Sujadi. The first set between the 41st- and 12th-ranked pairs in the ITA came down to a tiebreaker. The Wildcats prevailed 7-6(4) and carried that momentum into a 6-3 second set win to take the contest.
Tina Jiang and Crystal Leung capped off the day for the Lions versus North Carolina's Ashley Dai and Kate Vialle. After dropping the first set 4-6, the sophomore/senior Columbia partnership rallied to take the second, 6-4. The Tar Heels claimed the tiebreaker 10-3 to eliminate Jiang and Leung.
