PROVIDENCE,R.I. – On Thursday, Feb. 20, the Columbia women's swimming and diving team kicked off opening day of the 2014 Ivy League Women's Swimming and Diving Championships at Brown's Katherine Moran Coleman Aquatics Center. The Lions competed in four preliminary events in the morning sessions, including the 500 freestyle, 200 IM, 50 freestyle, the one-meter dive, and followed with the finals evening sessions with two additional relay events.

Alena Kluge is off to fantastic first day grabbing the Lions sole Ivy League title of the night in the 200 IM. Kluge led the way early with a top time of 1:58.87, the fastest time in the Ivy League this season, in the morning prelims session. The senior returned in the championship finals to hit the wall in a pool record NCAA 'B' cut time of 1:58.74 to capture the victory. Kluge was the only swimmer to clock in under the two-minute mark and was one of two Lions to finish in the top three. After a sixth-place finish in the prelims with a time of 2:02.11, Mikaila Gaffey returned in the championship finals to post a personal-time of 2:00.83 for a third-place finish.

Trudi Patrick and Christina Ray both posted 'B' finals qualifying times in the 50 free prelims behind personal best performances. Patrick finished 11th in the morning sessions at 23.43 and Ray finished 13th matching her top time of 23.47. Patrick bested her time in the consolation finals with another personal record of 23.29 for a runner-up finish and tenth place overall.

In the 500 free, Corinna Bertelsen swam a career-best time of 4:54.31 for an 11th-place finish in the prelims. The senior went on to finish 15th overall with a time of 4:55.73 in the 'B' finals.

The quartet of Gabbie Toback, Gaffey, Ray and Kluge concluded opening day with a fourth-place time of 3:39.21 in the 400 medley relay.

Columbia tallied 244 points through six events for fourth place. The Lions will return tomorrow for the second day of action at 11 a.m. with preliminaries, and then conclude with finals sessions at 6 p.m. Click the link above to view the full schedule of events.

Adult ticket prices are set for $30 event passes, $4 one-day prelim tickets and $6 one-night finals tickets. Children (under 12) and student prices are $1 one-day prelims and $3 one-night finals tickets.
