NEW YORK - Second half goals from Nicholas Pappacena and Arthur Bosua helped the Columbia men's soccer team to improve to 3-2 on the season, after a 2-0 win over Fordham on a beautiful night at Rocco B. Commisso Soccer Stadium.
After a scoreless first half where the Lions controlled the ball on its own end, Pappacena made his chance count early in the second.
Sophomore Rhys Williams stole the ball away from a Fordham defender 30 seconds into the second half, then found his classmate Pappacena in the middle of the box. The forward made the most of a useful cross from six yards out, drilling a ball on the left half of the net past the Fordham goalie.
Columbia looked relaxed after the goal, and was able to sit back and control the ball for the rest of the second period. In the 82nd minute, the Lions had another opportunity when Andrew Tinari placed a perfect corner kick onto the outstretched head of Arthur Bosua. The freshman forward popped the header into the net, putting the game away at 2-0.
The Lion defense was instrumental in helping Dylan Castanheira earn his first career victory. The first-year goalie only faced two shots on goal, thanks in part to an active back line consisting of starters Jack Gagné, Zach Morant, Bryce Terrill and David Westlake.
Next up will be two straight road games for the Lions, starting this weekend. Columbia will travel to New Rochelle, New York, this Saturday, Sept. 27th, for a 4 p.m. contest against the Gaels. The following Saturday, October 4, Columbia travels to Brown for its Ivy League conference opener.
