NEW YORK – The defense of the Columbia women's volleyball team (6-12, 4-5 Ivy) came shining through on Friday night as the Lions held the Brown Bears (10-11, 4-5 Ivy) to a .043 attacking percentage en-route to a 3-0 sweep (25-22, 25-15, 25-16).
After a back-and-forth start to the opening set, Cassie Wes was able to spark things up with a big ace to tie things up at 9-9 and get the Columbia offense going.
From there, the momentum continued for the Lions as Anja Malesevic rallied with three-consecutive points, forcing Brown to call a timeout with the Lions leading, 12-10.
While the Bears responded back to tie things up at 22-22, Columbia was able to call a timeout of its own to spark three-consecutive points and take a 25-22 victory in a set that never saw a difference of more than three points.
It was all Columbia in the early parts of set two as the Lions jumped out to an early 17-7 lead, but the Bears were able to respond back with five of the next seven points to cut it to 19-12. That wouldn't be enough, however, as Columbia was able to pull away and take set two, 25-15, holding the Bears to a negative attacking percentage (-.135) to seal a 2-0 advantage heading into the intermission.
The Lions wouldn't give up from that point on as they took and kept the lead in set three to seal a 3-0 sweep with a 25-16 final-set victory.
Leading the way was senior Katarina Jovicic who posted up 12 kills and seven blocks while Anja Malesevic contributed with 11 kills and a pair of blocks in the win. As a team, the Lions finished the match with 12 blocks while forcing 23 Brown attacking errors.
Columbia will round out its five-game home stand on Saturday as it welcomes Yale into Levien Gymnasium at 5 p.m.
