Hardie, Cunningham Win Events at Metro Holiday Season Opener

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - In the opening indoor track meet of the 2014-15 season, Sarah Hardie was a winner in the 1 Mile run, while Aminant Iriafen crossed the line first in the 200m dash in the Metro Holiday Season Opener at Staten Island's Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex.
Coming off a rookie campaign in which she won two Ivy League titles, Hardie seemed back in midseason form with a personal best 5:03.25 for the win. The sophomore held off teammate Devon Towell, who finished second in 5:04.05 in her first indoor meet of her career.
Joining Hardie with a victory on the day was Ashley Cunningham, who crossed the line with a 24.69 second run in the 200m dash to win the event.
The Columbia men also put together some top finishes on the day, including two fourth place performances from Corey Hammond and Alek Sauer. Hammond clocked a 1:05.05 in the 500m run, while Sauer went 4:18.81 in the 1 Mile run.
Brian McGovern was not far behind Sauer in fifth with a 4:24.69 in the 1 Mile run, while Charlie Theiss and Tyler Otterstedt finished seventh and eighth, respectively, in their first college meet.
In other events, Taylor Click claimed seventh in the men's 1K at 2:31.10, while Yelnats Calvin was eighth in the 400m run at 50.34.
The Lions will be back in action on January 22, when the teams head back to the Ocean Breeze Athletic Complex for the Gotham Cup.
