ORLANDO, Fla. – The Columbia baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision at No. 9 UCF Saturday afternoon. Senior Jordan Serena extended his hitting streak to 14 games and streak of reaching base to 20 consecutive games in the contest.
The Knights (13-2) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the first and opened the scoring after a single from Tommy Williams. Kyle Marsh made it 2-0 with another base hit and a walk brought in the third run of frame. James Vasquez followed with an RBI single to cap the four-run inning.
Columbia (2-4) went station-to-station with three singles by Robb Paller, Gus Craig and Nick Maguire in the top of the fourth. With one down and the infield back, Randell Kanemaru brought in the Lions' first run with a ground out to trim the deficit to 4-1.
Two walks and an error in the fifth set the table for Matt Diorio, who knocked in Dylan Moore with a single to restore the four-run advantage.
The Lions filled the base paths again in the top of the seventh, but the Knights' top reliever Harrison Hukari was called out of the bullpen to get the third out. Hukari got the job done, forcing a ground out to wiggle out of the jam.
From there, Hukari retired six of the final seven batters to close out the win.
Kevin Roy fell to 1-1 on the season after lasting 3.1 innings. Roy allowed all five runs on four hits and seven walks.
Columbia and UCF will wrap up the series on Sunday, March 8 for a 1 p.m. contest.
