NEW YORK – When the Columbia football team took the field for its first practice of training camp Monday afternoon, they were treated to a remarkably different Robert K. Kraft Field than they used during spring ball.
With the support of the University, Lawrence A. Wien Stadium's FieldTurf has been replaced and a new surface and the surrounding track has been completely transformed.
The Landtek Group, based in Long Island, spent approximately three and a half months completing this project, giving Kraft Field and running track a complete revitalization.
“The field had not been replaced for 10 years and the track for almost 20 years, so this was a big challenge for us to get done during the summer months,” said Erich Ely, Columbia's Associate Athletics Director for Facilities Operations and Capital Projects. “The relocation of the jumping event areas, and the addition of a netting system behind both end zones will really enhance the way that our track and field, women's lacrosse and football programs are able to use the space. We are very happy with the end product.”
Kraft Field is now is branded with Columbia blue end zones and the Lions' block “C” at the 50-yard line.
The new track surface is Beynon 1000 and includes an upgraded pole vaulting area, steeplechase and long and triple jump pits from Sportsfield Specialties.
