ITHACA, N.Y. — The Columbia volleyball team dropped a four-set decision at Cornell (18-25, 21-25, 29-27, 15-25) Saturday afternoon at Newman Arena.
After losing the first two sets, the Lions saved two match points in the third to extend the contest. Cornell went up 24-23 on a block by Macey Wilson and Emily Wemhoff, but first-year Chichi Ikwuazom and senior Zoe Jacobs responded with one for Columbia to level the score. The Big Red went right back on top 25-24, but the Lions saved that one as well when Shae Bauchens' serve did not land in play. Columbia scored the next point on a combo block from Jacobs and sophomore Ara Peterson to gain momentum, and put the set away a few points later, 29-27, on Anja Malesevic's fourth kill of the frame.
Earlier this season at Levien Gym, the Lions saved three match points in the third to eventually stun the Big Red in five. However, Cornell dashed any hopes of a second comeback, using a 14-5 run in the fourth set that put them up 19-10. The Big Red scored six unanswered points to close the run, and the Lions could not find the momentum to recover.
Ikwuazom led Columbia (10-8, 5-3 Ivy) in both kills and blocks. The rookie sensation entered the weekend among the NCAA's top five in hitting percentage and top 20 in blocks, finishing the match hitting .348 with a dozen kills and five blocks. Malesevic tacked on 11 kills and four blocks.
On the ground, senior libero Cassie Wes went for a match-high 23 digs. Wes came into the weekend among the top 10 nationally in digs per set (5.30) and improved upon that mark by averaging 5.75 in the contest. Sophomore Natasha Kosowicz also reached double figures with a career-high 17.
For Cornell (9-9, 3-5 Ivy), Emily Wemhoff tallied a match-high 12 kills (.310), leading the Big Red to a 54-40 advantage in kills and .183 to .094 advantage in hitting. Macey Wilson recorded a match-high nine blocks, resulting in a 13-11 overall edge for Cornell.
The Lions close out their five-match road trip next weekend when they visit Brown and Yale. The Bears are up first on Friday at 7 p.m., followed by the Bulldogs on Saturday at 5 p.m.
