BALTIMORE — Sophomore Josie Little went for a career-high 19 rebounds, including 14 in the first half, as the Columbia women's basketball team used a plus-22 rebound margin to defeat Loyola University Maryland, 65-53, Wednesday night at Reitz Arena.
Columbia (4-2) came into the night among the top 20 in the NCAA in rebound margin (+12.4) and dominated Loyola (2-4) 45-23 on the glass. Little was outrebounding the Greyhounds on her own, 14-10, at halftime, which included 10 boards in the second quarter alone. She entered the half having already tied her previous career-high and added five more in the fourth quarter to help the Lions cement the victory.
Columbia used a 22-7 scoring advantage in the second quarter to take a 31-22 lead into halftime. Loyola came out and hit three 3-pointers in the opening minutes of the second half as part of a 12-2 run. The last of the three triples sliced Columbia's advantage all the way down to a single point, 34-33.
The Lions never surrendered the lead. Senior Tori Oliver ended the run with a bucket inside and sophomore Paulina Koerner drained her second 3-ball of the quarter to put Columbia back up by six. The lead grew to as many as 13 with 6:21 left in the fourth. After the Greyhounds chopped it back down to single digits. Little all but put the game away with fast-break basket, giving the Lions a double-digit lead with a minute remaining.
“It was great to get production from more than just our regulars tonight,” said head coach Megan Griffith. “Josie had that huge 14-rebound first half and Janiya (Clemmons) came in and gave us some energy in the second half that we needed. Sometimes, you hit a lull at halftime. Loyola came out with the first punch in the second half, but it was really good to see how we responded to it.”
Junior Camille Zimmerman led all scorers with 18 points, but was limited to three rebounds – she averaged more than 12 entering the contest. Oliver followed closely behind with 17 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including all nine of Columbia's first-quarter points. The Manassas, Virginia, product added four rebounds to go above 500 in her career, becoming the sixth Lion in program history with 1,000 points and 500 rebounds.
Koerner ended the night with nine points, all on 3-pointers, and first-year Janiya Clemmons added a much-needed boost in the second half with a career-high eight points.
For Loyola, Lauren Daugherty scored a team-high 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting. Daugherty also led the Greyhounds in rebounding with eight. She was joined in double figures in the scoring column by Br Betz-White with 14. Half of Betz-White's scoring came in the fourth quarter.
Columbia shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the floor, edging Loyola's mark of 39.6 percent (21-53). The Lions really took advantage at the free throw line, outscoring the Greyhounds 12-4 on seven additional attempts.
Columbia plays its third game of the week in less than 48 hours, returning home for an 11 a.m. tip on Friday against UMass Lowell. It will be Education Day at Levien Gymnasium, with over 1,000 elementary school students expected to be in attendance.
