NEW YORK — A record crowd saw the Columbia women's basketball team earn its third consecutive victory, cruising past UMass Lowell, 76-57, Friday afternoon at Levien Gymnasium. The Lions hosted their ninth annual Education Day game, announcing a program-record attendance of 2,271.
Elementary school students representing 15 New York City institutions packed Levien Gym. Columbia has partnered with the New York City Department of Education every year since 2008 to invite local students to its campus. The day allows all students to tour Columbia's campus and learn about college, some of whom are stepping foot on a college campus for the first time.
“Getting so many young people on Columbia's campus is terrific,” said head coach Megan Griffith '07CC. “It's a great experience for those kids to see a college campus and think about their futures. To then have them all come to the game is great. We really fed off the energy.”
The Lions (5-2) did not disappoint the more than 2,000 elementary school students in attendance. Ivy League-leading scorer Camille Zimmerman netted a game-high 20 points on 9-of-11 shooting, including a shot from beyond half court to give Columbia a 10-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Lions scored 27 points in the second quarter to take a 46-25 advantage at halftime and went on to lead UMass Lowell (0-8) by as many as 31 in the fourth.
Fourteen Lions found the scoring column. Sophomore point guard Paulina Koerner joined Zimmerman in double figures with 14. The rout included the first points of the season for senior Ara Talkov, senior Carolyn Gallagher and junior Jillian Borreson. First-year Stephanie Flynn scored the first points of her collegiate career, while first-year Maya Sampleton netted her first collegiate field goal.
“We're figuring out how to play together and run our offense,” added Griffith. “Defensively, we've done a much better job of dialing in.”
Two days after posting a season-high, plus-22 rebound margin in a hard-fought victory at Loyola Maryland, the Lions bested themselves by outrebounding the River Hawks by 24. Sophomore Josie Little, who grabbed a career-high 19 boards at Loyola, led the efforts once again with 11, as Columbia crashed the glass for 47 rebounds to UMass Lowell's 23.
“Rebounding is all mental for me. I've been trying to crash the glass and go after rebounds as much as I can,” said Little. “Devon (Roeper) and I will get here before practice and work on rebounding with Coach Will (Ingersoll). It really helps.”
Senior Devon Roeper added five boards for Columbia, who came into the game as the Ivy League's top rebounders and ranked 11th in the NCAA in rebound margin (+14.0). Following Friday's win, Little moved into the top five in the Ivy League in rebounds (8.6), joining Zimmerman (9.7), who ranks third.
For UMass Lowell, Kayla Gibbs registered team-highs of 19 points and nine rebounds. Gibbs shot 4-of-8 from the floor and knocked down 11-of-12 free throws. Nicole Hayner added 14 points off the bench.
Following a stretch of three games in six days, the Lions take a four-day layoff before returning to action on Wednesday, hosting Providence at Levien Gymnasium. Tip is scheduled for 7 p.m.
