West Point, N.Y. – A 2-0 record now marks the start of the Columbia men's swimming & diving season as they downed Army 200.5 - 90.5 and edged Penn 152 – 148 in a three team dual-meet on Friday, Nov.5 in Crandall Pool. The Lions placed top finishers in eight events, led by a domination on the boards by junior Jayden Pantel and big day from juniors Michal Zyla and Jae Park.
Reigning Ivy League Champions, Jayden Pantel picked up where he left off last season owning the boards for the Lions. With a tally of 313.10, the junior earned the three-meter dive win to to remain unbeaten and extends his current career-streak of consecutive three-meter dive victories in dual-meet action to 23, behind a back-to-back 11-0 seasons. Pantel was even more impressive in the one-meter dive with a winning score of 337.70.
In the pool, the Lions 200 medley relay squad of Cole Stevens, Jae Park, Terry Li and Hank Gullick sparked a great start to the day with a combined winning time of 1:30.82. Brian Tsau followed with a tough distance victory in the 1000 freestyle with a time of 9:23.26. Park returned to deliver a Columbia first-place in the 100 breaststroke at 56.16 and Michal Zyla bested a tying-win in the 100 backstroke at 49.82 with a sole victory in the 200 backstroke at 1:48.13. While Terry Li nabbed the final individual victory of the day in the 100 butterfly with a time of 48.26, the Lions posted a number impressive performances.
Rookie Nian-Guo Liu posted a pair of runner-up finishes in his collegiate debut in the 200 freestyle (1:38.63) and the 500 freestyle (4:32.65). Kevin Frifeldt collected second-place point in the both 50 freestyle (20.42) and 100 freestyle (45.17). Park added runner-up finishes in the 200 I.M. (1:51.56) and 200 breaststroke (2:01.94) in a busy day for the junior.
The Lions capped the afternoon with a meet clinching victory in the 400 freestyle relay. The tandem of Terry Li, Nian-Guo Liu, Hank Gullick and Kevin Frifeldt combined for a time 2:59.25 to edge Penn for .09 seconds for the crown.
Up next, the Lions (2-0) will travel to New Haven on Saturday, Nov.12 to face Yale in dual-meet action at 2 p.m.
