NEW YORK –With a 189 – 111 win over Dartmouth, the Columbia women's swimming and diving team capped their dual-meet season with another solid win on senior day in Uris pool on Sunday, Feb. 7. It was an exciting meet that saw a couple new pool records and the Lions winning 12 of 16 events.
Columbia honored and recognized the class of 2016 who swam their last meet at Uris Pool, including Ellie Feeley, Mallory McKeon, Kristine Ng and Christina Ray.
The Lions jumped out to a strong start as Brooke Bernardin led a 1-2-3 Columbia sweep in the three-meter dive. Bernardin tallied a first-place score of 261.90, followed by Kim Yang in second place with 255.38 and Chloe Hacker in third place with 251.55.
The Columbia 200 medley relay squads were sensational with the tandem of Mary Ashby, Jennifer Shahar, Christina Ray and Kathleen O'Rourke taking the win at 1:43.45. Along with, the foursome of Miriyam Ghali, Maddie Pujadas, Trudi Patrick, and Isabelle Jubin posting a runner-up time of 1:47.36.
The first-year class was impressive early as Jessica Antiles picked up a 200 freestyle victory with a time of 1:52.49, Lynley Matthews came away with the crown in the 100 backstroke at 57.82, along with Aileen Lee in the 100 breaststroke at 1:05.62.
Trudi Patrick gave the Lions four-straight wins with a first-place finish in the 200 fly at 2:03.82. Patrick edged seniors Kristine Ng, who clocked in with a runner-up time of 2:04.21, and Mallory Mckeon who finished in theird place at 2:10.17.
The fastest event of the afternoon went to Christina Ray who hit the wall in a winning time of 24.02 in the freestyle to lead another Columbia 1-2-3 sweep. Ashby posted a second-place time of 24.12 and Shahar took third place at 24.15.
Ashby returned to deliver a victory in the 100 freestyle at 50.61. Matthews and Lee both picked up two individual wins on the day in the 200 backstroke (2:04.15) and 200 breaststroke (2:22.59). Lee 's time of 2:22.59 lead 1-2-3 Columbia charge in the event with Celia Frick taking second place at 2:24.47 and Antiles in third place at 2:25.73.
Christina Ray capped her final meet at Uris Pool with a win in the 100 butterfly and joining her teammates in setting a new pool record in the 200 freestyle relay. The squad of Ashby, O'Rourke, Shahar and Ray combined for a winning time of 1:33.13 to set a new Uris Pool Record. The mark bests the previous time of 1:34.50 set by Yale earlier this season.
En route to the victory in the event, Mary Ashby posted a new pool record time in the 50 free with a time of 23.04. Her time bested the previous record 23.07 held by Ray.
Columbia finishes the regular season 2-5 overall and in the Ivy League. The Lions will have a week off before the head to Princeton, N.J. Rhode to compete for an Ivy League Championship title from Feb. 18 -20.
